Damian’s Stony Hill wins Reggae Grammy

Damian “ Jr Gong” Marley won the Best Reggae Album award at the 60th Grammy Awards, yesterday, at Madison Square Garden in New York City.

He won for Stony Hill, his fourth solo effort. It got the nod over Wash House Tingby J Boog, Chronology by Chronixx, Avrakedabra by Morgan Heritage, and Lost in Paradise by Common Kings.

Released on July 21 last year, Stony Hill spent several weeks atop the Billboard Reggae Album chart. It peaked at number 65 on the Billboard 200 Albums chart, number 104 on the France Album chart, number 26 in Switzerland, and number 94 in the United Kingdom. Released by Republic Records, it has to date sold over 18,000 copies in the United States, making it the biggest seller among the nominees.

Marley, who was not at the show, previously won Best Reggae Album for 2001’s Halfway Tree and 2005’s Welcome to Jamrock. Welcome to Jamrock is his most commercially successful work, having sold over 500,000 copies in the United States, where it was certified gold.
